The Spread of Rugby

Rugby is believed to have spread to america by 1874 when a number of prestigious colleges were challenged by Mcgill University in Montreal. Rugby was brought to New Zealand by Charles Monroe who was studying in England in the 1860's and learnt the game during his time there. When he returned to new Zealand he suggested it to his local football club and in May 1870 New Zealands first rugby match was played. The Romanians learnt rugby from France in the late 1800's, Argentina learnt it from English and Scottish migrants and it was played in Canada by British setllers.
